Frost Love arrives in Chicago claiming she has accepted a promising new job. Black knows his younger cousin well enough to recognize a lie—but not the danger hiding behind it.
Tori Torrio, a newly promoted Atlanta detective, has come to Chicago to escort a protected witness back to Georgia for trial. Before she can get him out of the city, he disappears.
The missing man is Frost’s abusive ex—the same man she once took to court for protection.
And the evidence suggests Frost found him first.
Black steps in before Tori can put his cousin in handcuffs, only to discover Frost has been conducting an investigation of her own and lying about what brought her to Chicago.
Then powerful men begin taking an unusual interest in the case.
Lou “Magic” Lewis, Chicago’s top cop, wants every development reported directly to him. Surgeon General Tim Roberts has ties to the missing witness. Walter “The Chair” Kelly, head of The Gangster’s Alliance, has started asking questions no street boss should know to ask.
Men like them do not concern themselves with one missing man.
As another body surfaces and the evidence against Frost grows, Black finds himself caught between a detective determined to find her witness and people powerful enough to make the entire case disappear.
The deeper Black digs, the harder it becomes to keep believing Frost is innocent.
Now he must decide whether he is protecting his cousin from a conspiracy—or helping her hide the bodies.
